Three Major Daines Bills One Step Closer to Becoming Law

U.S. SENATE – Today three bills sponsored by U.S. Senator Steve Daines passed out of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources (ENR) Committee, including one of Daines’ top forest management priorities that would stop frivolous litigation from holding up forestry projects. Download Daines’ remarks HERE.  “My bipartisan bill would put an end to a procedural loophole being abused by fringe groups in the courts to block important forest restoration work that is critical for what I like to call the 4 W’s: reducing wildfire, protecting wildlife, improving watersheds, and supporting workers,” Daines said. Daines’ bill to reverse the disastrous Cottonwood decision will help increase active

Daines to Biden: More Paperwork and More Red Tape Won’t Help Our Forests

U.S. SENATE – U.S. Senator Steve Daines today issued the following statement on President Biden’s Earth Day Executive Order that diverts resources from actual conservation work and sets the stage for further restrictions and prohibitions on public lands.  “Once again, the Biden administration is failing to address the underlying issues affecting Montana’s forests and threatening communities while demonstrating a lack of understanding on the many complexities surrounding effective forest management,” Daines said. “More paperwork and red tape is not the way to create healthier ecosystems, support rural communities, or meet our environmental objectives—the answer is forest management. Sadly, the Biden administration seems

Daines’ Forest Management Reform Bills Receive Senate Hearing

U.S. SENATE — Two of Senator Steve Daines’ forest management reform bills were discussed at a U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing today. Daines’ forestry bills will address abuse in the courts and frivolous litigation to help increase active forest management that reduces the risk of catastrophic wildfires, protects Montana families and communities from fires and supports good paying timber jobs.   Daines’ bills would reverse the disastrous Cottonwood decision and establish a pilot arbitration program to protect collaboratively-developed forest management projects from fringe litigation. Watch and download remarks HERE. “Forest management is good for our workers, watersheds, wildlife, and wildfire prevention. It’s a critical part of our way of life

Daines Calls on Forest Service to Increase Timber Harvest Volume in MT after Falling Short in 2021

U.S. SENATE — U.S. Senator Steve Daines today is calling on the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) to do more to reach its timber harvest goals in Montana after falling short by 30% in fiscal year 2021, due in large part to increased litigation and red tape following the Cottonwood decision. Daines stressed that Montana communities rely on the USFS to reach these goals in order to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires, protect families from fires and support their economies.  “I understand the backlog of consultation due in large to the precedent set by the Cottonwood decision has contributed to the shortfall in volume

Montana’s congressional delegation urges federal agencies to finalize ESA rule changes

Republican members of Montana’s congressional delegation on Wednesday sent a letter to federal officials in support of changes to the Endangered Species Act meant to speed timber work on critical habitat. The state’s Democratic senator said he also supports the changes. The proposed amendments to interagency consultation regulations would reverse precedent set in a 2015 Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decision over critical Canada lynx habitat. Judges on the case determined that when “new information” indicates a land management plan’s direction might harm a federally-protected species, the Bureau of Land Management or the Forest Service must consult with the U.S.

Mont. lawmakers urge Biden to keep Trump species rule

Montana lawmakers are urging the Biden administration to adopt a rule change — filed in the days before the White House changed hands last month — that aims to eliminate a potential hurdle for forest management projects when endangered species might be affected. Sen. Steve Daines and Rep. Matt Rosendale, both Republicans, outlined their support in a letter yesterday to top officials at the Interior Department’s Fish and Wildlife Service and the Commerce Department’s NOAA Fisheries. “The proposed rule will allow land managers and wildlife biologists to follow the best-available science for consultation. It will remove an ambiguity in current

USFWS to end harmful regulations

News from Senator Daines U.S. SENATE — U.S. Senator Steve Daines today applauded the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on their proposed rule to strike down a burdensome requirement resulting from the Cottonwood decision that yields no conservation benefit and has delayed forest projects while killing Montana timber jobs. The change comes as a result of Daines’ work and efforts.  “This is a great step in reducing unnecessary red tape that has tied the hands of our land managers and diverted resources for a paperwork exercise that has no real conservation benefits,” Daines said. “This change will help improve the

Fish and Wildlife Service proposes ESA rule changes meant to speed timber projects

Federal officials on Monday proposed revisions to consultation rules under the Endangered Species Act that could streamline the process for approving timber projects on critical habitat. If enacted, the revisions would allow the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service to circumvent consultation with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials over land management plans when new species are listed as threatened. Land management plans are broad documents that guide agency decisions on public lands. The plans don’t authorize specific projects like timber sales, though such projects must be consistent with the plans’ standards. The Endangered Species Act mandates that

Following Daines’ Work, USFWS to End Burdensome Regulations Harming Montana Forest Projects, Jobs

U.S. SENATE – U.S. Senator Steve Daines today applauded the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) on their proposed rule to strike down a burdensome requirement resulting from the Cottonwood decision that yields no conservation benefit and has delayed forest projects while killing Montana timber jobs. The change comes as a result of Daines’ work and efforts.  “This is a great step in reducing unnecessary red tape that has tied the hands of our land managers and diverted resources for a paperwork exercise that has no real conservation benefits,” Daines said. “This change will help improve the health of our forests,

The West is burning.’ Daines, Feinstein testify on Emergency Wildfire Act

In a political era when Republicans and Democrats rarely agree on anything, the catastrophic wildfire season now raging across the American west could prove compelling enough to rally bipartisan support for legislation to change how forests are managed. That is the hope of Sens. Steve Daines and Dianne Feinstein; one a Montana Republican the other a California Democrat, who on Wednesday spoke in common support of the Emergency Wildfire and Public Safety Act, a bill that would substantively alter fire suppression practices in the United States. U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont.“We are at a critical time,” Daines said in his
