Daines Statement on Trump Gitmo Executive Order

U.S. SENATE — U.S. Senator Steve Daines today released the following statement after President Donald Trump announced an executive order to keep the Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (Gitmo) open.

“I applaud the President for making sure terrorists stay behind bars in Gitmo,” said Daines. “We cannot allow the world’s most dangerous terrorists to roam free and harm Americans.”

Background:

On February 13, 2017, Daines sent President Donald Trump a letter urging him to strengthen the mission at Guantanamo Bay in order to better safeguard Americans.

On August 15, 2016, Daines condemned the Obama administration following reports that 12 Yemeni nationals and three Afghans were transferred from Guantanamo Bay.

On May 26, 2016, Daines introduced legislation to temporarily ban the transfer or release of detainees from Guantanamo Bay.

On April 5, 2016, Daines introduced a bill that would permanently ban the transfer of Guantanamo detainees to the U.S. and would suspend the release of Guantanamo detainees internationally until September 30, 2017.

On March 10, 2016, Daines led 14 Senators in introducing a resolution to detain ISIL fighters at Guantanamo Bay.

In March of 2016, Daines went on a fact-finding mission to the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay.
