U.S. SENATE —U.S. Senator Steve Daines today recognized National Human Trafficking Awareness Day by supporting legislation to crackdown on online sex trafficking.
“Sex trafficking is a growing problem in Montana,” said Daines. “We must take steps now to stop this abuse and protect vulnerable members of our community.”
The Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act eliminates federal liability protections for websites that knowingly assist, support or facilitate online sex trafficking. Additionally, it allows state and local prosecutors to prosecute websites that violate federal sex trafficking laws.
Earlier today, Senator Daines spoke on the floor of the U.S. Senate in recognition of National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

Statements of Support:
“Individuals who engage in child sex trafficking are typically very adept at using technology to recruit and exploit their victims. The migratory nature of this crime has been underscored by the lack of federal laws necessary to enable investigators and prosecutors to bring online child sex traffickers to justice. I thank Senator Daines for co-sponsoring this bill, which will give states more power to prosecute online sex traffickers and protect children across the country.” – Montana Attorney General Tim Fox
“We commend Senator Daines and his colleagues for sponsoring the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act and for working with tech companies to ensure that this legislation will protect good actors in the system from liability while closing loopholes that enable online sex trafficking. This bill has the potential to do a lot of good, empowering Montana to protect children and adult victims of sex trafficking from being exploited on Internet sites that knowingly hide behind the limitations of current laws.” – Christina Henderson, Executive Director, Montana High Tech Business Alliance
