Sen. Steve Daines on Friday recognized Shayne Pierre of Polson as “Montanan of the Week” for his exceptional heroism during a traffic accident in May.
Pierre, 15, helped save 10 fellow students when a drunk driver collided with their school bus. Although Pierre was injured in the crash, he had started attending to the driver when he noticed a fuel leak and quickly got the students off the bus.
As part of his “Montanan of the Week” initiative, Daines submits a statement of recognition in the official Congressional Record, the document that reflects the official proceedings of Congress.
“Shayne’s quick actions and selflessness deserve many thanks and for that, I want to recognize him,” Daines told his fellow senators. “Through this incident, Shayne acted as a role model not only to the students on the bus, but to his classmates, peers and community. I am proud that he is a citizen of the great state of Montana and an example to all.”
The Montana Highway Patrol gave Pierre the Colonel’s Award for Meritorious Service on July 15 at the Lake County Courthouse.
Daines welcomes anyone to nominate fellow Montanans for the “Montanan of the Week” program by calling 202-224-2651 or by filling out the contact form at http://www.daines.senate.gov/content/contact-steve.
