Montana’s two U.S. Senators have renewed their efforts to name a mountain in the Madison Range after a prominent conservationist who died in 2016.
Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and Republican Sen. Steve Daines have introduced a bill to name a peak after Alex Diekmann, who worked on land deals and conservation easements for the Trust for Public Land until he died of cancer last year.
In a statement, Daines said Diekmann brought people together to “protect our public lands.”
“I am excited to launch this bill again this Congress and hope for swift consideration and enactment,” Daines said.
Tester said in a statement that Diekmann “was a champion for our public lands.”
“His impact can be felt across Montana, and renaming this peak will forever honor his passion for the wild,” Tester said.
Diekmann worked for the Trust for Public Land as a project manager for 16 years. He worked on conservation projects all over the state, including several in the Madison Valley and in the Gallatin Canyon.
The pair introduced a bill to name the peak last summer during the previous session of Congress. The Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources held a hearing on the bill but it did not proceed beyond that.
