U.S. SENATE —U.S. Senator Steve Daines today released the following statement after the U.S. voted to confirm President Donald J. Trump’s nominee for Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Dr. Ben Carson.
“Secretary Carson knows what it is like to grow up in poverty and will use that experience along with his deep devotion to the country to best serve Americans,” Daines stated. “It is only fitting that his career marked by consistent compassion would lead him to this position.”
Carson was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Development on January 24, 2017.
Immediately following Carson’s confirmation, Daines invited Carson to visit Montana and looks forward to working with him to “reduce regulatory burdens on those seeking housing, exercise good stewardship over taxpayer resources, and increase workforce housing.”

Daines and Carson met in his office on January 17, where they discussed ways to more effectively manage HUD to provide more affordable housing for the underprivileged, including Native American communities, which Daines invited Carson to visit. They also talked about instituting policies that grow America’s economy by breaking the cycle of poverty. Last Congress, legislative language requested by Daines prompted the agency’s chief watchdog to ultimately reveal $2.23 billion in waste at HUD.
