Daines: Montana Farmers Need Clarity, Action on Hemp Production

U.S. SENATE – U.S. Senator Steve Daines today sent a letter to Department of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue to swiftly implement hemp provisions outlined in the 2018 Farm Bill.

“Hemp in Montana is a great opportunity to create Montana jobs and grow Montana Ag,” Daines said. “As a member of the Senate Ag Committee during discussions for the 2018 Farm Bill, I worked hard to create more opportunities for Montana farmers and remove hemp from being considered a controlled substance. It’s time we get that implemented.”

Daines was a cosponsor of the Hemp Farming Act, which was included in the 2018 Farm Bill, in the 115th114th, and 113th Congress.

Daines fought to support farmers seeking to use their water rights to grow industrial hemp in states where industrial hemp cultivation is allowed.

Statements of Support:

“We see hemp as another tool in the toolbox for agricultural producers to attain profitability.  As farmers prepare for planting, they need to know that there will be risk protection for any crop they plant. Montana Farm Bureau thanks Senator Daines for his efforts and urges USDA to quickly implement the farm bill.” – John Youngberg, Executive Vice President, Montana Farm Bureau Federation

“There is huge potential for the growth and production of hemp in Montana. This new crop will allow producers a way to diversify their operation, which will in turn strengthen the agriculture economy. Montana Farmers Union appreciates the legislative work done to pass the Hemp Farming Act of 2018 and looks forward to all the possibilities hemp production in Montana will bring.” – Alan Merrill, President, Montana Farmers Union
