U.S. SENATE – U.S. Senator Steve Daines today sent a letter to President Biden expressing deep concern over the depletion of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) and urged him to support more domestic energy production.
“The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is the world’s largest stockpile of emergency crude oil with the capacity to store 714 million barrels. The SPR has protected America from major supply disruptions and served as a vital windfall in the event of natural disasters and wars since its creation following the 1973 energy crises, but it was never intended to compensate for domestic policy shortcomings,” Daines wrote.
“Manipulating energy reserves to bring gas prices down from historic highs as the midterm elections approach is not an accomplishment, it is a national security risk,” Daines continued.

Daines serves on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and has been fighting back againstthe Biden administration’s anti-energy agenda.
Yesterday, Daines issued a statement on President Biden’s plan to release up to 15 million more barrels of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve instead of increasing domestic energy production.
In December 2021, Daines introduced a bill that would prohibit the Biden administration from tapping the SPR for reasons other than a severe energy supply interruption until the Secretary of the Interior issues a plan to increase oil and gas production on federal lands and waters.
