Bill Would Require ICE to Detain Illegal Immigrants Who Commit Crimes
U.S. Senator Steve Daines today joined his colleagues in introducing the “Laken Riley Act,” which would require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest illegal immigrants who commit theft, burglary, larceny or shoplifting offenses and would mandate that these illegal immigrants be detained until they are removed from the United States so they cannot commit additional crimes.
“The brutal murder of Laken Riley is a tragic reminder of the devastating results of Biden’s open border policies. Our families and communities are not safe as long as criminals are willfully released back to the streets instead of being deported. This is a nightmare turned reality and we must do something before more families face these horrific consequences,” said Daines.
This bill was introduced following the murder of Laken Riley, a 22 year-old Georgia resident, by an illegal immigrant who unlawfully crossed into the country in 2022 and had previously been arrested for endangering the welfare of a child and received a citation for shoplifting but was later released.
The “Laken Riley Act” passed the House last week in a bipartisan vote of 251-170. The Senate cosponsors are urging Senator Schumer to bring the “Laken Riley Act” to the floor for a vote immediately.
