Daines Blasts Biden for Rewarding Abortion Industry, Abusing Taxpayer Dollars in Support of Abortion

U.S. SENATE – U.S. Senator Steve Daines, founder and chair of the Senate Pro-Life Caucus, today slammed President Biden for rewarding the abortion industry by rescinding important pro-life policies and allowing taxpayer dollars to support abortions. Today by Executive Order, Biden reversed the Mexico City Policy which prevents global abortion and dismantled the Title X Protect Life Rule, which prevents taxpayer dollars from going to groups performing and promoting abortions.

“President Biden’s decision to reverse critical pro-life policies at home and abroad shows a complete lack of respect for the sanctity of human life,” Daines stated. “These actions will enrich Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry at the taxpayers’ expense, while endangering the most vulnerable. The United States should not be promoting a radical abortion agenda throughout the world, we should be leading the fight to protect the unborn and all life.”

Biden also withdrew the United States’ support for the Geneva Consensus Declaration which states there is no international right to abortion and declares a sovereign nation’s right to protect all innocent human lives by rejecting abortion.

Background:

Information on Mexico City Policy:  On January 23, 2017, President Donald Trump reinstated and expanded the Mexico City Policy, renamed Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance. This policy requires foreign nongovernmental organizations to agree, as a condition of receiving U.S. global health assistance, not to perform or actively promote abortion as a method of family planning in foreign countries. The global abortion groups International Planned Parenthood Federation and Marie Stopes International refused to accept U.S. funds rather than comply with the policy.

Information on Title X Protect Life Rule: On March 4, 2019, the Department of Health and Human Services finalized a regulation, referred to as the Protect Life Rule, that disentangled abortion from the Title X family planning program. Specifically, the rule requires a rigorous physical and financial separation of family planning and abortion activities in Title X funded projects, as well as prohibits the performance of, referral for, or promotion of abortion in Title X programs. Planned Parenthood affiliates withdrew from the Title X program rather than separate their family planning programs from abortion.
